Falling from sight

Edited to add the verse my damn eyes missed out.

Falling from sight

These days are slipping fast away,
And dark is creeping through the hay
That lies unbaled on dewy clay.

When swallows swarm in mustered flight,
And owl song fills the starry night,
The failing moon the only light,
I wish the pulsing heat would stay.

Blood that cools, the pulse that slows,
Fallen sun in sky still glows,
Beyond the hill, the river flows.
Here all is still, I watch you sway,

On slender legs too frail, too long
To stand alone. Senses once strong,
You strain to hear the blackbird’s song
That used to start and close your day.

I watch the falling stars go dark
On this old house, this field and hark
The roe hart and the fox’s bark,
Not yours, old friend, fading away.
